Who

I'm Fong-Wan Chau (周风云), a physician originally from Chile with Chinese heritage. I completed my medical training in Latin America and I'm currently preparing for medical residency in the United States. Medicine drew me in through its blend of science, problem-solving, and human connection.

My background is split between cultures and languages: I grew up speaking Spanish, learning Chinese from family, and later English for medical literature and global communication. This multilingual life shapes how I think and write.

What This Site Is

This is a personal archive and thinking space. I write about medical education, early childhood development, language acquisition, and maintaining an independent web presence. The site has existed since 2014 and serves as a long-term record of evolving thoughts.

Posts appear in English, Spanish, or Chinese depending on the topic and my mood. The multilingual approach is intentional — some ideas feel more natural in certain languages, and forcing everything into one language would flatten the thinking.

Now

(Updated May 2026)

Currently preparing for the Chilean EUNACOM medical licensing examination and exploring pathways to medical practice across different healthcare systems. Still deeply interested in making medical education more efficient and humane — reading about spaced repetition, active recall, and evidence-based learning techniques. Also fascinated by how people maintain focus and depth in an increasingly distracted digital environment.

On the technical side, I'm learning more about the IndieWeb, ActivityPub, and decentralized social protocols. This site is part of that exploration — trying to own my content and distribution rather than relying entirely on platforms.

Colophon

This site runs on hand-written PHP with minimal dependencies. The design prioritizes readability, speed, and longevity over trends. No analytics, no tracking cookies, no third-party scripts on initial page load. Content is written in Markdown and version-controlled.

I believe in the open web: HTML that lasts decades, URLs that don't break, RSS that can't be algorithmically throttled. This site is an exercise in building something that might still work in 2040.

Stack: PHP, PostgreSQL, Parsedown, minimal CSS, system fonts.
